CWLC Founders

The California Women’s Law Center was founded in 1989 by Sheila Kuehl, Abby Leibman, and Jenifer McKenna.

One evening, over dinner, Abby and Jenifer decided that California needed a place which focused solely on women and girls, dedicated to systemic change rather than direct services.  On a paper tablecloth, they sketched out the idea that would become CWLC.

Sheila, Abby and Jenifer took that idea and built it into reality, creating the first law center in California dedicated solely to addressing the comprehensive and unique legal needs of women and girls.

For over 20 years, CWLC has been continuously serving California’s women and girls.
